Guard railings on balconies and porches must be at least 36 inches high on residential properties, with a 42-inch minimum required on elevated surfaces more than 30 feet above grade. Baluster spacing cannot allow a 4-inch sphere to pass through this is one of the most commonly cited failures on older Chicago properties where the original ironwork was spaced wider than current code allows. Railings also must resist a lateral load of at least 200 pounds at any point along the top rail, which is why post anchoring method matters: surface-mounted plates do not meet code on most applications, so we core-drill and epoxy-anchor every post directly into the masonry or concrete. Every railing we fabricate is built to meet or exceed these requirements.
